Returning to work after taking time out to start a family is a pretty daunting prospect. There is no right or wrong time to go back to work. It’s all about what works for you. But when you do decide to make that return, you need to tread carefully and prepare for the change. It will probably come as a shock to the system at first, but those feelings can be overcome eventually. This guide will talk you through the steps you’ll need to take.
Assess Whether the Time is Right for You
After having a baby, you will have to decide how long you want to stay at home and be a parent and when you want to go back to work. As I mentioned above, this is something that is entirely up to you. Different people will need different lengths of time, and there is nothing wrong for that. It’s best not to force yourself back into work if you can afford that. Taking your time and finding the time that’s most natural for you will make things much easier on you in the long-term. So, assess whether the time is right for you to go back yet or not.
Weigh Up Your Work Options
If you are on maternity leave, you might want to go back to your old job. But many people want a change of scenery when they have been away from work for a while. It’s up to you to weigh up all these options. But don’t be afraid of taking a new direction in your career. If you’ve always wanted to work in communications, why not get your dream communications job? Or if you’ve been thinking about retraining, maybe now is a good time to do it. Consider all the ideas and options out there.
Put Childcare Plans in Place
It’s vital to put plans in place for how your child will be cared for when you’re back at work. Some people choose to arrange for their partner or family to play a bigger part. But for most, it’s necessary to hire a childminder who will be able to look after the child properly when you go back to work. If you do this, consider various options and get to know them and their career background a little more before hiring them. You need to be able to trust them completely if you’re going to leave your child with them.
Battle Conflicted Feelings & Throw Yourself into Your Work
You will probably have some conflicted feelings when you do start work again. Many parents feel guilty about leaving their child while they go to work. But there is no need to feel guilty. Young children are more than happy to be left during the day as long as they’re being fed and cared for. And the childminder that you employ is never going to act as a replacement for you as a parent. Many parents find that it’s best to throw themselves into their work in those early weeks and months. This gives you something to focus on, and it takes your mind off worries and concerns.
