Following the announcement that former America’s Next Top Model contestant Yaya DaCosta would be playing the role of Whitney Houston in the upcoming Lifetime biopic about the late singer/actress, people began to wonder what would be done about Whitney’s music.
Angela Bassett made a statement that Lifetime had acquired the rights to use Whitney’s music but according to reports they were able to secure rights from the music publishers but not for the actual recordings. To remedy that problem, the network has hired singer Deborah Cox to re-record some of Houston’s greatest hits and DaCosta will lip sync to Deborah’s recordings.
Whitney’s family did not approve of the film so we’re guessing that’s probably one of the reasons the network has had issues securing rights to the music. Meanwhile, fans reacted to the news of using Deborah’s vocals instead of Whitney’s and opinions are mixed.
I love Deborah Cox’s voice but not using Whitney’s vocals takes away from the overall feel of the movie in my opinion. What do you think? Vote in our poll below!
