Danielle Powell was kicked out of Grace University, a religious institution in Omaha, Nebraska, after university officials discovered her same-sex relationship and now she must repay her scholarship. Powell has created an online petition to help pay back the $6,300 debt she has to the university.

Grace’s university handbook states that:

“Any student involved in bad wordually immoral behavior, including premarital bad word, adultery, and homosexual acts, is at minimum placed on University probation and may be subject to a Judiciary Hearing.”

When the university found out about Powell’s relationship, she appeared before a judiciary board to determine if she should stay or not. Powell was suspended in March 2011 but was offered a second chance  through their restoration program which involved counseling and attending church. She began the process summer 2011, but was still dating her girlfriend before the start of the spring 2012 semester which ultimately led to her removal.

Powell’s partner, Michelle Rogers, created the petition to force the school to relinquish the debt. At the time of press, the petition had 54,993 supporters.

What do you think about the university’s decision? Do you agree?
