We couldn’t ignore the social media trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon – the Woman Candy Wednesday posts. We prefer to set trends but there’s nothing wrong with joining in on the fun from time to time. With that said, we want to introduce JessicaSimien.com’s inaugural Woman Candy Wednesday crush for the week, the beautiful and talented Janelle Monae.
Janelle Monae is a 28-year-old Kansas City native and after moving to Atlanta in 2001, she met OutKast’s Big Boi and founded her own record label, Wondaland Arts Society, before releasing her first EP in 2003. Her vocals appeared on OutKast’s Idlewild and after stumbling on her MySpace page, Sean Diddy Combs fell in love with her style. She went into partnership with Bad Boy Records in 2006.
Since 2012 she has been one of the faces of CoverGirl, which says a lot about the impact her career is making. We believe her endorsement with CoverGirl is very well deserved because she’s such a beauty, inside and out, and that’s exactly why she’s our first #WCW!
We included her latest video, “Electric Lady,” for your viewing pleasure. I dare you to watch and not vibe along with the music! The video features Janelle rocking her big afro (love!) and showing off her dancing skills and who knew she had such a nice figure? The video reminds me of my undergrad days at my beloved HBCU, Jackson State University.
It’s safe to say that this is my favorite Janelle Monae track and I’m sure you’ll like it too. With that rap she dropped at the end, this should be the real female anthem because I sure felt like she was talking about me! *flips hair*
Also, you can check out a pretty cool interview she did with The Breakfast Club by clicking here.
