This week’s vlog just about covers a whole month. Bad, I know. I’m trying to vlog weekly but I was having issues with the camera and then there was such much going on that I didn’t have time to fiddle with a camera everywhere I went. I’m going to get it together though because I have Jayla Koriyan vlogging goals LOL.
So this vlog (unfortunately) begins on a sad note. It was hard being vulnerable on camera but I’m trying to make sure I show what my life is really like. So many times we see the glamorous or happy side of people’s lives, especially because of social media, but in reality we don’t have it all together all of the time. If you know me, you know I like to keep it real…and it doesn’t get any more real than talking about your friend’s death and your fight to not be depressed on camera.
I didn’t want to keep it in the vlog but Funmi Franklin gave me some words that changed my mind. :)
From there I traveled to Starkville, Mississippi for the second stop of my Kinks & Curls on Campus natural hair tour. I partnered with the MSU Starlight Dancers and the group of students that coordinated the event with me (pictured below) truly lifted my spirits.
They took my mind off of the death of my friend and having to attend his funeral the next morning. I seriously don’t know how I would’ve gotten through that night had they not been as welcoming and helpful as they were.
I wish I could’ve gotten some footage from the event but I left my camera in the hotel room.
I also traveled to New Orleans to take T Lo (well, I call him Tony) to Cafe du Monde for the first time. We happened to be talking that morning and somehow or another we ended up on the subject of beignets and he mentioned that he’d never had them before. So as and when you don’t have anything else to do on a bright sunny Saturday, you take a mini road trip with your bestie!
We made a pit stop in Hattiesburg to visit my Daana boo so we actually didn’t get to experience New Orleans on a sunny day like we’d planned to. Needless to say we had a great time. From meeting a group of bunnies to people watching and sharing a plate of beignets, I have no complaints!
Lastly, you see a tiny piece of a listening session I attended but the highlight is definitely at the end. I got to see one of my favorite tv personalities and entertainers in concert…Big Freedia! You already knoooowwwwww! (Freedia fans will get that lol)
I started watching Freedia’s show on Fuse maybe a year or two ago and I fell in love with his spirit and his team and watching them make a way out of a very, very mean city. When I found out they were performing in Jackson, I had to be there. I even took my favorite shaker (aka my little sister) with me.
