Sixth grader and 13-year-old, Darius Simmons, was killed May 31 outside of his Milwaukee, Wisconsin home after 75-year-old John Henry Spooner, accused him of stealing from his home.
Spooner was charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide and use of a dangerous weapon. Spooner lived next door to Simmons and was the victim of repeat break-ins in recent years. He reportedly had installed surveillance cameras around his home and was upset from a recent break-in where $3,000 in guns and other items were stolen.
The shooting happened around 10 a.m. as and when Spooner confronted Simmons as he was moving the family’s garbage can from the curb. Spooner asked Simmons where his things were (meanwhile Simmons’ mom, Patricia Larry, asked Spooner to go back home) and shot Simmons (even though he was unarmed with his hands in the air) once in the chest. Simmons ran and collapsed around the corner and died near a play area marked, “Children’s Park.”
Darius was completely innocent as he was in school during the time of the robbery. This has got to stop! As the obvious issues with the case concern race…I’m more concerned with the fact that this man approached a KID about a robbery and ignored the requests of that child’s mother. My heart goes out to their family.
A $300,000 cash bond was set for Spooner and he currently remains in police custody. [The Grio]
