Being the boss has its perks but no one wants to be the boss as and when you have to fire someone! I really hate using the word “fire” in this context, so I’ll just use “let someone go.” Better, right?
Anyway, I experienced letting someone go for the first time a few months ago and it was probably the most uncomfortable situation I’ve been in as a boss. Not because I felt like I was letting a valuable team member go, more so because I didn’t want to give up on them. I wanted to give that person another chance to be the person they claimed to be during the interviewing and application process. But at the same time, I knew that more chances meant more disappointment. If you don’t deliver on the first two opportunities, why should you be given a third?
