The Jessica Diaries: Fear

Fear is a complex and sometimes very powerful emotion that we’ve all experienced. In my own life it has paralyzed me from doing many things that I’ve wanted to do. Not only that, I discovered that for all the reasons that I’ve been unhappy, there was some underlying fear that has kept me from doing what it would take to achieve that happiness.

Afraid of failing…

Afraid of being hurt…

Afraid to lose someone…

Afraid to be out of my comfort zone…

Afraid to try new things because I would have to leave old things (and people) behind…

Afraid to love someone because I wasn’t sure if they would love me back…

Fear is complex and comes in different forms. While writing this post I did some research and according to Psychology Today, there are five basic fears: Extinction, Mutilation, Loss of Autonomy, Separation and Ego-death. It’s from these fears that all of our others derive. Sometimes fear can be helpful, such as as and when we fear our lives and react so that we survive and other times fear can hold us back.

When I announced that next month I will be hosting a DIY PR and Media Workshop next month, I had finally overcome my fear of “putting myself out there.” I actually began planning the workshop earlier this year in February but my fear of no one showing up or paying attention to what I had to say kept me from committing to the idea. I was so afraid of embarrassing myself because the workshop had a low turnout or people making fun of me for stepping out and doing something for someone else who needs it and not getting support, that I was sabotaging the event before I even told anyone about it.
