The Internet-crazed world that we live in is causing many people to use it in ways I’m sure no one ever thought it would be used.
A 20-year-old young man known online as ‘Stephen’ announced that he would be committing suicide on the anonymous website, 4chan, and broadcasting it to users who signed up to watch.
After 200 users signed up to watch the disturbing event, ‘Stephen’ swallowed some pills and drank vodka before lighting a fire in the corner of his room around 7 pm on Saturday. After lighting the fire, he crawled underneath his bed as smoke surrounded him.
The video, still available online, shows firefighters pulling him from the room.
Several users encouraged him as he made his attempt, some even getting frustrated because they couldn’t watch or because the room was dark.
It was confirmed that the man is a student at the University of Guelph in Ontario after a spokesperson for the university confirmed that the incident had taken place on campus. A fire was reported at 7:40 pm on Saturday, firemen and police were called and they put the fire out and found ‘Stephen’ injured. The damage caused by the fire was only in the student’s residence but other students were evacuated as a precaution.
4chan has been described as “one of the darkest corners of the Internet” and is a series of chatrooms and photo sharing boards.
