You have to watch who you leave your children with, whether you are a mother or a father.
A 3-year-old Brooklyn toddler was beat to death Saturday after she accidentally used the bathroom on herself, according to police sources.
Kimberly Torres left her two children – Jedia, 3 and Andrew, 5 – with her boyfriend Kelsey Smith while she went to work Saturday.
Police responded to a 911 call reporting “bloodcurdling” screams from an apartment in a city homeless shelter at 38 Cooper Street, shortly before 4 p.m. Once they arrived to the scene, they found Jeida Torres with injuries to her head and body and Andrew badly beaten. Little Jeida was transported to Wyckoff Hospital, where she died.
Kimberly Torres arrived at the scene with the children’s grandfather 30 minutes after the 911 call. The grandfather broke down and according to a neighbor, lost his mind and was cry uncontrollably, after learning of what had happened to Jeida.
The suspect, 20-year-old Kelsey Smith, fled the scene and left the two children behind.
According to police, Smith has a criminal history dating back to 2008 with 14 prior arrests ranging from robbery, gang assault and grand larceny. Police believe that Andrew’s injuries were sustained prior to the incident on Saturday, after a neighbor stated that there had been two weeks of consistent fighting and violence inside the apartment.
Smith was caught by police near Queens after receiving tips on his whereabouts. He had attempted suicide by slashing his wrists.
A neighbor claimed she had called the police about the continuing fighting in the home but had not gotten a response.
As of early Sunday, no charges had been filed in the fatal beating of Jeida.
