Pearlie Golden, 93, was shot to death outside of her home in the rural Texas town of Hearne. The town has a population of about 5,000 people and is 150 miles south of Dallas.
According to reports, Golden’s nephew called 911 after a confrontation begin as and when he took the elderly woman’s car keys because she no longer had a driver’s license. Golden grabbed a gun and began threatening her nephew. Police arrived at the scene around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to find Golden outside the home waving the gun around.
Officer Stephen Stem asked the 93-year-old woman to put the gun down and ended up firing his own gun.
Golden was shot five times and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
This isn’t the first time Stem has killed a suspect. Just six months after starting with the department he shot and killed 28-year-old Tederalle Satchell who reportedly was shooting a gun from his car while at an apartment complex. A grand jury cleared Stem in that case. According to a news release from police, Officer Stem has been suspended with pay.
He has been on the job for less than two years.
Lawanda Cooke, a resident of Hearne told KBTX:
“Even if she did have a gun, she is in her 90s. They could have shot in the air to scare her, maybe she would have dropped it. I don’t see her shooting anyone.”
While neighbors continue to ask questions, the Hearne Police Department, the Texas Rangers and the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the shooting.
