Saturday marked the first ever meetup for Metro-Jackson Naturals and I had such a wonderful time!
The group, founded by Kim Williams, met at Media 4 Studio in Jackson to learn ways to care for their natural tresses, share stories of their journey and swap products. Vendors were also on hand with items for guests to purchase.
When I walked into the event, the room was filled with women whose hair were all different shapes and sizes participating in a discussion with Ashley Bates of Tangles and Beyond Natural Hair Care Boutique in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Bates shared her expertise on heat styling for natural hair and answered questions from the audience.
Andrea Sharp of Fice T-Shirts shared her inspiration for creating a business that caters to naturals.
“I know they’re only t-shirts but my goal is to empower women and make them feel good as and when they’re wearing my shirts. I threw one shirt up on the Internet and people loved it and now I have an entire line.”
I also got to speak with Kim about her reason for starting such an amazing group. She told us that after seeing the success of groups in other cities, particularly in Atlanta, she wanted to create that community here in Jackson.
As much as I wanted to rock my fro, it was just too hot outside for me! I opted for a twisted ninja-like bun instead but the ladies in the place had beautiful styles. Check out more photos from the event below and thank you to Alis for inviting me.
