R&B Singer Frank Ocean Comes Out, Says His First Love Was a Man

Frank Ocean, 24, is the voice behind many of my favorite songs. His voice and lyrics are completely beautiful. Early Wednesday morning via his Tumblr page, he revealed that he shared a summer romance with a man who he later fell in love with. Read an excerpt from his message below.

4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day, I’d see him, and his smile. I’d hear his conversation and his silence…until it was time to sleep. Sleep I would often share with him.

By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love, it changed my life.

He continues the message revealing that his lover actually had a girlfriend and he struggled to master his emotions throughout the ordeal, often questioning his “Creator” for an explanation for his feelings.

There are several things I like about his message. The main being his courage and bravery to do the unheard of in the Black music community. I also feel the emotion behind his words and how beautifully he opened up to the world.

His courageous act gives him a new meaning of independence on this Independence Day.

I hope that this gives other brothers and sisters the courage they need to fully accept themselves and know that they have the support of other artists and individuals.
