I got a chance to watch Rachel Jeantel’s first interview since testifying in the George Zimmerman case last night and her personality made me smile.
A young woman, dealing with the tragic death of her friend and hurtful comments about her and the things that make her unique managed to pull it all together and discuss how her life has changed while shedding light on who Trayvon Martin really was. That’s what I call strength.
The 19-year-old woman told Piers Morgan how she felt about the comments made about her online and in the media and also said that her underbite is what causes her sometimes inaudible speech. Jeantel also said that people don’t understand the world that she, and Trayvon, comes from.
Radio personality Tom Joyner was so moved by Jeantel’s testimony that he offered her a full scholarship to an HBCU of her choice. According to the Business Insider, Joyner told her:
“If you want to graduate from high school, and go to an HBCU, even if it’s not in Florida but especially Florida, like Florida Memorial, Edward Waters or FAMU, if you want to do that, I want to help you do that. I will help you get tutors to get you out of high school, tutors to help you pass the SAT and I will give you a full ride scholarship to any HBCU you’d like.”
The scholarship will be funded by the Tom Joyner Foundation.
