For the most part I’ve had a very easy going pregnancy. I’m only about 5 pounds heavier than my pre-pregnancy weight, I haven’t had any swelling (yet) and I’m moving around pretty well if I say so myself. The only major discomfort I’ve experienced has been terrible back pain and an inability to get a good night’s sleep because of it.
As someone who believes in the power of resting and getting an adequate amount of sleep, this has been more than frustrating. On one hand I try to be positive and look at it as preparation for the late night feedings that are just weeks away, but on the other, it makes me sad. I really need a good, long night’s sleep as often as I can get it for the very same reason – it’ll be unheard of for the next couple of years.
According to the American Pregnancy Association, 50-70% of pregnant women experience back pain. It can be caused by increased hormones (they’re to blame for everything), the additional weight of the baby, bad posture, standing for too long and bending over. The APA suggests implementing preventative measures like avoiding high heels, squatting instead of bending over and keeping your feet elevated.
Even with those measures, back pain can still occur so what’s a girl to do?
I decided to get a prenatal massage by Rachel Garletts LMT #1867, a massage therapist based in Pearl, Mississippi. Her company, Massage by Rachel, specializes in a variety of massage techniques including therapeutic, relaxation and hot stone massages.
I went in for my massage and was immediately greeted with a smile by Rachel. I’ve had several massages done before so I wasn’t nervous but I was curious about how the prenatal massage would differ from the ones I’ve had in the past.
After I completed by entry paperwork, I was led to a beautiful and cozy massage room to begin the massage. Rachel used several pillows to prop my body up so that it was aligned properly. I learned that this is probably why I’ve had such a problem getting great rest – my body wasn’t aligned.
When she got to the lower half of my body, I noticed that whatever she was doing for my feet helped me relax even more than I already was at that point.
Overall I had a wonderful experience and can’t wait to go back. Not only did it release the stress and tension that I’d built up, it felt nice to be pampered and treated with care. Rachel was very attentive, accommodating and she even gave me a bottle of water and a free smoothie card after we were done!
Massage by Rachel is located in Pearl at 3206 Service Drive, inside Eclipse Nutrition.
