According to new census data, for the first time in history racial and ethnic minorities make up almost half of the under-5 age group in America.

Minority populations are growing more rapidly in numbers than whites due to immigration and high rates of birth, particularly among Hispanics. According to Thomas Mesenbourg, the acting director of the Census Bureau, whites in the under-5 age group are expected to become a minority this year or next year based on current rates of growth.

The government is also projecting that in about five years, minorities will make up over half the children under 18 in the U.S. population.
