A new report issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday revealed that more than half of young people in the U.S. ages 13-24 are infected with HIV and do not know it. Among those numbers, young, Black gay and bisexual men are the highest at risk.
During a conference call with CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden said:
“Given everything we know about HIV and how to prevent it in 30 years of fighting the disease, it’s just unacceptable that young people are becoming infected at such high rates.”
I agree with Frieden, it is totally unacceptable.
The CDC is most concerned with the rate of the disease among Black men. In 2010, 72% of the 12,000 new infections in young people occurred in young men who have sex with other men and just about half of those infections were among young, Black men.
Frieden also says that one reason rates among young gay men are higher is because they engage in “riskier” behaviors than their heterosexual counterparts. And very few get tested.
HIV/AIDS is becoming an epidemic that is destroying our youth. We must put issues like this in the forefront of social discussion. The disease is not going to just go away.
