Thanks to Task 42 on my 100 In A Year list, I’ve been reading lots of books the past few months. One of my latest reads is “The Letting Go eBook” by Leo Babuta. As you can tell from the title, the book deals exclusively with learning the art of letting go.
My friend Daana is one of my go-to people when I’m in need of some really good advice and I’ll never forget something she told me one time I was going on a rant. I’m paraphrasing here, but she told me that I have to stop looking at people for who I want them to be instead of accepting them for who they are. I can’t try to manipulate situations, I can only change how I respond to them. Basically, it’s not about them, it’s about me.
This morning I sent her a text message telling her that she was a genius.
Not only did Daana’s advice change my relationships with others (they became less stressful and more pleasant), Babuta’s book gave the same exact advice!
We add so many negative emotions to our lives because we don’t let go of things. We allow situations that are beyond our control to stress us out, make us angry and so on. I’m challenging you to let go of whatever is bothering you. Think long and hard about what you can do different and apply those changes and watch how much easier that thing is to deal with in the future.
