Whether you have a little of it or a lot of it, you need money to survive and thrive in this world. Sometimes we have enough money to take care of our families and get the things we need and want. Other times we can fall short and need a helping hand.
My finances changed, as well as every other aspect of my life, when I became a mother. I can no longer just think of myself – I have a little human that I’m responsible for and will take care of for the rest of my life. My role as a caretaker financially is currently based around food, clothing, shelter and other basics. As our son grows older, I have to make sure I’m leaving a legacy that he can actually be proud of and is worth inheriting.
I thought it would be a great idea (especially with the holidays rolling around) to start a side hustle. If you’re a regular reader, you’re probably wondering why since I have so many irons in the fire now. The short and simple answer is that the legacy I want to leave for Marley will require me to have multiple streams of income. I don’t want him to struggle with finding employment. I want him to be able to go to his mom and dad and ask how he can be part of our businesses and we have a place for him that will come with pay (and not our love, LOL). Not only that, I love to work and see the fruits of my labor in whatever forms they take on.
Those reasons are why I’m a hustler.
For my new gig I originally wanted to do something in the natural hair space but I decided not to limit myself! I’m selling handmade butters for your skin and hair, handmade candles and other trinkets like coffee mugs, journals and more.
It’s important to choose a side hustle that fits your lifestyle. I tend to be overly ambitious, but I enjoy testing hair and body products and I absolutely love candles. I’ve become an avid coffee drinker in the last three or four months and I’ve kept journals since I was in elementary school. These things are relatively inexpensive to develop so they were perfect for me. I also needed a hustle that would allow me to balance it with my other endeavors and never-ending responsibilities as a mom.
Here are a few ideas for side hustles if you need some help thinking of something:
- Makeup Artist
- Graphic Designer
- Moving Service
- Social Media Manager
- Pet Sitter
- Jewelry Designer
- Cleaning Service
- Personal Trainer
- Online Instructor
Once you decide on your hustle, you need to brand it. You’ll need a color theme, font theme and of course a website. Since I became a blogger in 2012, I’ve used GoDaddy for everything. From finding and grabbing domain names before someone else can get them to hosting websites like the one you’re reading now, I’ve been a loyal customer. It’s only right that I trust them with my side hustle website as well.
GoDaddy has this amazing feature called GoCentral for people who aren’t very tech savvy. With GoCentral, you can create a website for your side hustle in under an hour – without needing years of experience, or a full weekend to devote to getting a site up and running.
It only took me a few minutes to set up my website. Of course I have loads of experience but even if I didn’t, it would have been a breeze to get everything going. I literally put in the basics and was done in about 30 minutes! They even have royalty-free stock images you can use if you don’t have photos of your inventory yet.
I ended up changing it a little to reflect everything I’ll be offering and that’s another reason why GoCentral is the perfect tool for designing your website.
After you’ve set up your website, you’re ready to go live! Be prepared for orders, inquiries and other means of contact by your new customers. Having a working website will ease the entire process. GoCentral has everything you need to make a great website for your project, and to connect you with people that will care about it… email marketing, SEO tools, you name it! Your website can be updated and viewed on mobile, making it easy to update your website while you’re waiting for soccer practice or ballet lessons to end – or in my case, waiting for Marley to finish his bottle so that I can change his diaper.
You can view my site here (I’m still working on getting it like I want it) and let me know what your side hustle is in the comments section below!
P.S. – Don’t forget to set up your own website using GoCentral here.
