Kerry Washington Covers Ebony, Reveals She Would Not Have Taken Role On ‘Scandal’ “If The President Was Black”

I’m with Funky Dineva, Kerry Washington stepped into her destiny with her role as Olivia Pope on ABC’s hit show Scandal.

Washington’s character, Olivia Pope, is not loved by all though. Shonda Rimes, the creator of Scandal, as well as Kerry herself have received lots of criticism from viewers and other folks in the media for the ongoing affair between Olivia Pope and the president.

She’s the March cover girl for Ebony Magazine and revealed some interesting info in her interview with them and sorta kinda addresses the criticism:

“I was a little concerned because [the character has] a scandalous relationship with the [occupant of the] White House,” the actress said. “I thought, ‘If the president on the show is Black, I will not do the show.’ Because to me, it was too important a moment. I didn’t want to do anything that compromised my relationship with the [president] or that made it seem like I had an insider view on the Obama presidency. I thought that would be so disrespectful and so against all the work that I had done.”

Washington has been and still is a very vocal supporter of President Obama and gave a speech at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. I think it’s very smart of her to have considered the possible outcomes of taking on the role if the president was Black and how it could affect Obama.

Kerry, you’re alright with me!
