Kendrick Lamar Causes Social Media Stir With Verse On Big Sean’s “Control”…Why Is It A Big Deal?

By now you’ve either heard about or listened to the unanticipated lyrical verbiage declared by Compton’s own, Kendrick Lamar, on Big Sean’s new joint “Control”.

Listen to the track below:

“Control” was a track set to make it on Sean’s upcoming album, Hall of Fame, but due to clearance issues from a sample, it won’t. In addition to K. Dot, the track also features Jay Electronica. Although the track belongs to Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar steals the spotlight – not just on the track, but the entire game of hip-hop – according to social media.

We all know hip-hop is a competitive sport and every artist’s dream is to be the greatest rapper of all time, so why is Lamar’s verse on “Control” such a big deal?

Well, its pretty simple… It’s a big deal because of who he didn’t name.

Kendrick spits:

“I heard the barbershops be in great debates all the time
Bout who’s the best MC? Kendrick, Jigga and Nas
Eminem, Andre 3000, the rest of yall?
New niggas just new niggas, don’t get involved
And I ain’t rockin no more designer shit
White T’s and Nike Cortez, this is red Corvettes anonymous
I’m usually homeboys with the same n*ggas I’m rhymin’ wit
But this is hip hop and them niggas should know what time it is
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale
Pusha T, Meek Millz, A$AP Rocky, Drake
Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller
I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you n*ggas
Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you n*ggas
They don’t wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you n*ggas”

As you can see, Kendrick made it very specific who he thinks his prime competitors were in his groundbreaking verse. If you play it a few times, you get to thinking…

Damn, he’s missing a few!

One in particular that is definitely noteworthy is Wiz Khalifa. As Wiz arrogantly put it in one of his dopest mixtapes to date, Taylor Allderdice, “You can’t, not put me with big n****s names, like they count me out of the lil n****s name because I’m not with the lil n****s.”

So taking it back there, I wonder was this prelude and motive for Kendrick’s verse.

But not only does Kendrick throw shade on one of the game’s greatest and most marketable talents, he also steps on a few toes when he self-proclaimed himself as the King of New York and the West Coast at the same damn time.

“I’m Makaveli’s offspring, I’m the King of New York
King of the Coast, one hand, I juggle them both”

Sure enough he’s the face of the West Coast due to his come up and falling rappers such as The Game and Snoop, but proclaiming himself as the King of New York is a little far-fetched. Where does that leave Diddy and Hov? Not to mention the voice of the underground, Talib Kweli and other rappers who’ve made their name with consistent music and fan bases like, Joe Budden and Fabolous. Fellow new comer Joey BadA$$ wasn’t even named a competitor! And then what about Wayne!? SHEESH!!

Don’t get me wrong I love the cockiness. Where would Jordan or Hov be if they didn’t feel like they were the greatest and the thrown was for the taking? But in the same light, I’m like young boy you just got on! Pay your dues and don’t burn bridges. That would be the politically correct thing to do.

This takes us back to our culture and what we’re accustomed to in the hip-hop community.  We take what we feel we deserve and those who wait, just keep waiting. With that said, I appreciate how Kendrick shook up the game and lit a fire under these poppy ass new comers and complacent rappers that have made it. Hip-hop is exciting again. If you feel that Kendrick has stepped out of line, take a look back and reflect over history. Name one “great” that waited his turn and shut his mouth. None!! Leaders usually stand out of the group. Not purposely, but because of destiny.

So I guess he’s up next. He put himself out there. The rest of the game, whether he called them out or not, is just following suit now.  Mad props.

Until Next Time,
Shades
