John Dabla is a 21-year-old Minneapolis native and the CEO of JohnSpeaks. Through his website he has been able to interview celebrities and satisfy his thirst for writing and he wanted to share with us his journey and hopefully inspire others to take a risk.
We recently had an opportunity to chat with him about his upcoming projects and the inspiration behind his blog. Check it out below.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: What inspired you to pursue a career in journalism?
John Dabla: I was in a creative writing class in high school and we had an assignment to start creating blogs about our opinions on different topics the teacher would email us. I loved writing and I still do, it really came to a point where I said “Where do I wanna take my writing?” I really felt that the way that I write and people LOVE to read my stories/poems and what I have to say; I figured why not take it to a new level? I love being in the know of things and the social media/entertainment world. I wanted to create something that had a different vibe to it, not necessarily what is out there now, just something more current, up-to-date, as well as something original that no one my age was doing.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: How did you land you first celebrity interview? How did it make you feel? Who was it with and what did you learn from that moment?
JD: My first one was with Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes’ stepson, Damian Leakes. That moment was beyond surreal. You know social media is a work of wonders in many different aspects. I was watching “I Dream Of NeNe: The Wedding” and was live tweeting during an episode that he was in and his publicist reached out to me about my website and offered the opportunity to me about doing an interview. I knew of him through RHOA and the wedding special but beyond that I had never heard of him. From that moment, his publicist and I talked, Damian and I communicated about the opportunity and went forward. His responses to the answers made me realize that life is truly short and to cherish every single moment of it as well as to always love your family and be there through thick and thin regardless.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: What projects do you currently have in the works?
JD: I have SO many things coming up! It’s crazy (laughs). I have several video interviews coming up with artists from Minneapolis, I’m in a movie called “Homecoming” which is currently shooting, Season 2 of my YouTube Webseries will be airing this fall so I’ll begin shooting that in a few weeks. I will be making a guest appearance on a Hip-Hop talk show “Rap It Up” and I have interviews with some other celebrities and artists that I won’t say who, but people will definitely have to stay glued to Facebook and Twitter. I have some other projects as well, but can’t speak much on them; I’ve been doing lots of work in silence and just dropping teasers occasionally. You never know what I’ll be dropping!
