Today is day one of our anniversary celebration here on JessicaSimien.com and we’d like to kick things off by answering some of our most frequently asked questions.
I get asked lots of questions every day about this site and how it was started, who does all the writing and how I’ve branded it over the course of this last year. Check out some of the most frequently asked questions below and if you have any, feel free to leave them in our comment section!
Why did you start JessicaSimien.com?
JessicaSimien.com was supposed to just be a website where I could showcase my work and writing, sort of like an online resume. (That explains why I used my actual name as the domain address LOL.) As I started writing, I began sharing my posts online through my social networks and people started reading and giving me feedback. After things started picking up, I thought about my career as a PR practitioner and how difficult it was (and still is) to get media outlets to pick up my clients, since most of them were just starting out. I thought, I could just become the media!
Why do you use Nicki Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life” in all your videos?
I think everyone has that song that really inspires them and gets them going. “Moment 4 Life” does that for me. Even though I haven’t had “my moment” yet, I feel the way I would feel when I do. Nicki was bossed out in the song and her lyrics just make me say “hell yeah!” LOL! I feel her when she says that it’s her empire. That’s how I feel – JessicaSimien.com is the beginning of my empire and I want this feeling forever.
How do you manage your blog? Does it take up a lot of your time?
Ha! Yes! Blogging is definitely not a job, it truly has become my way of life. I have to constantly stay up on the latest news, trends, events and TV shows so that I can do my job. A blog is 24/7 and there is always someone interacting with you whether on your site or through your social networks. It takes a lot of, actually most of, my time but I’m not complaining. Who wouldn’t want all their time spent making a dream job possible?
What advice can you give other people wanting to start a blog?
I get this question all the time. Blogging is a commitment and I would not advise anyone to create a blog that they cannot fully commit to. It’s not as glamorous as it appears. Sure you get to attend fun events and mix and mingle with other movers and shakers but you’re doing it for work, not for fun. And when you’ve been out gathering quotes and other information, while everyone else is asleep you’re up writing about it so it can hit the web while everything is still relevant. Not only that, you have to be able to manage your time because your readers depend on you to deliver.
How does the support you get from others feel?
All the support I’ve received has been amazing! In this industry, you have to prepare yourself for the rejection and negative response and harsh criticism that is inevitable. I prepared myself so much for that, that I forgot that I would have supporters. I didn’t except so much support so soon and it feels great to have people behind me, helping me to reach my goals and ultimately put on for the State of Mississippi.
