Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has died at the age of 58 after a two-year battle with cancer.
Vice President Nicolas Maduro teared up as he announced Chavez’s death Tuesday during a state television broadcast. He called for unity and peace for the deeply divided country.
Chavez supporters gathered as news of his death spread amid tension in the streets. Although there have been no reports of major violence, Venezuela’s military is in the process of deploying to ensure the safety of all citizens.
