High School Football Player Dies After Scoring Touchdown During Game


Shawnee Mission West High School senior Andre Maloney died from complications from a stroke he suffered during a football game Thursday (Oct. 3) in northeast Kansas.

According to reports, the 17-year-old wide receiver became dizzy and collapsed on the sideline right after scoring a touchdown and although he was untouched during the play, Maloney complained that he couldn’t feel the side of his body. He had suffered a stroke.

Maloney was taken off the football field in an ambulance and was rushed to Overland Park Regional Medical Center before being transferred to Research Medical Center, where doctors discovered a blood clot in his brain. Maloney underwent three hours of surgery but doctors were unable to successfully remove the clot. Maloney died Friday evening.

Maloney started as a wide receiver and cornerback and had verbally committed to playing football at the University of Kansas.
