Happy Birthday To My Mom!

Today is my mother’s birthday!

If you know her personally, you know that she is an absolute character. She is never without a sarcastic comeback for anything you say to her, she’s a softie underneath her hard exterior and she keeps it as real as it gets.

The older I get the more I appreciate my mother and all that she’s done and continues to do for me. I’ve shared details about my childhood before but I don’t talk about my mom much. It takes a village to raise a child but I’m the woman I am today because of my mother. What better day than today to honor her?

Dear Mom,

As I’ve matured, I’ve come to understand the natural and instinctive bond between a mother and her children. You were the first person that I ever loved and no distance, disagreement or disappointment could ever separate me from you. I’m so blessed to have you in my life as an example of how to carry myself and strive for better. I watched you work full-time while working part-time and even pursuing a higher education all while caring for me and Bre by yourself. That is such a remarkable memory of your strength and how much you love us. It also instilled in me to never make excuses and to do what I have to do at all times to be the best that I can be.

Growing up as a rebellious teenager, I didn’t get it. I was so consumed in my life and what I wanted that I never stopped to consider all that you had on your plate. I never thought about the sacrifices you made. I never thought about how you probably needed someone to lean on. I never considered that you were tired and didn’t feel like being bothered sometimes. I never even took the time to think about how you weren’t sheltering me, you were actually protecting me from becoming someone that I wouldn’t be proud of.

And I thank you for that. I’m so grateful for that and I love you so much for that.

I know that there will never be a day that someone will love me more than you do. There will never be another you and I don’t take you for granted. I’m honored that God chose you to carry me and raise me…clearly no one else was equipped to do the job. :) I hope that you have a wonderful birthday and if I know you like I think I do, I’m sure you’ll be turning up before the week is out.

I love you Mama! *J. Cole voice*
