Alexandria Shelton was a senior at Grambling and was supposed to meet up with some friends Saturday night but she never showed up. After three hours had passed, her friends called her cell phone.
An unknown man answered saying he had found the phone in Girard Park. The friends drove to the park and met that man along with another man and retrieved the phone. According to police reports, the men left after handing over the phone.
The friends found Shelton’s vehicle nearby and called police for assistance.
Police located and removed Shelton’s body from a drainage ditch attached to the park’s pond near the north side of the park’s entrance a little after 12 a.m. on Sunday morning.
The Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office says Shelton drowned and they ruled out homicide and foul play.
Shelton was an honor student at Grambling with a 3.5 GPA. She was set to receive her degree on May 9, university officials are now working with her parents so that they may present her degree posthumously.
