“Like Whaaat”

“Bout Mine”

“Roll Up”

“Lay Your Head Back”

Next up, out of the West Coast is Compton’s own, Problem, for this week’s Mixtape Monday. The former ghost writer for Snoop Dogg dropped The Separation on June 13.

Leading off with the single “Like Whaaat,” I knew I had to add this tape to my playlist. I threw on my shades and proceeded down 55 to soon realize that this cat was going somewhere with this. Problem blesses us with a feel that is often duplicated by the likes of Tyga, except he authenticates it. The Separation is a vivacious boss tape that features a deep coalition of artists including Snoop Dogg, Tyga, Badd Lucc, Wale, T.I. and Wiz Khalifa. Produced by the League of Starz, Problem keeps dope sounds similar to his West Coast predecessors DJ Quik, Dre, and Too $hort.

While most of this 20 track collection keeps us bobbing our heads, Problem’s biggest flaw is his unsophisticated lyrical content. Relying on hooks to carry out the song with lousy lyrics are self explained on singles, “Bang Bang” and “Made A Mil Before The Summer”.

The Separation is an entertaining project that boasts old school West Coast flavor with delinquent themes such as molly-popping, weed-smoking and clothes-removing. While his antics keep him catchy and relevant, his musical intent is questioned. Problem has the potential to use his traction to create nationwide buzz but the quality and seriousness of his music could jeopardize the opportunity at hand. Until he makes the jump lyrically to connect to a wide demographic, he will stay on the bench and continue to be the sixth man behind Kendrick Lamar and The Game.

Don’t get it twisted though, The Separation is a street banger! Go check it out.
