It’s something we’ve all experienced and for some of us it’s something we all do on a regular basis. I knew I wanted to rant about people being indecisive but then I realized hey, “I’m pretty indecisive most of the time too” so how could rant about it? Then I thought to myself “how can I not?” The guy who rants all the time isn’t safe from even himself!
Cue the Rant!
We as a people and country are a pretty indecisive bunch. Sit back and actually think about it. How many times have you said “I don’t know” today? Well to help you navigate this ever-changing world and it’s numerous potential decisions with your indecisiveness, I’ve complied a list of three ways that can help you take charge.
The first thing you can do in your quest to be less indecisive is to sit down and come up with a plan. Write down important things you are trying to accomplish or do. It will help you organize and actually see what you have to do. Seeing the options also helps you understand and leads you into actually making a decision.
The second thing that will help you out is to visualize the consequences. After you sit down with the decisions you have to make (no matter how small) think about what’s likely to happen if you pick each one. Weigh your options and be open ended and realistic about the outcomes so you can get accurate depictions of each scenario in your mind.
And the last thing you can do is just actually do something. Take a chance. One thing that I still have problems with is my writing (and it sucks because I do so much of it and do it for a living). I’m so indecisive when it comes to whatever I’m writing because I want it to be perfect. But I credit a few of my teachers and the good folks over there at the Clarion Ledger for reminding me the best way to write is to ‘free write’ which is basically writing whatever comes to your mind on the subject. That’s how the best writing is made. Just literally write everything that comes into your mind in complete sentences. It doesn’t matter what comes out because there’s always a revision process.
Think of life like that.
While most of us are leery and indecisive because we recognize we might not be able to take one of our decisions back, we must remember that ultimately our life is in our hands and it’s apart of the journey. We have to remember that there are plenty of other decisions coming and we’ll ultimately get to our desired destination. I read a really good quote the other day about indecisiveness.
“The trouble with our brains”, says decision researcher Peter Ayton from the Society for Judgment and Decision Making, “is that they were designed to survive in the relatively simple environment of the African Savannah, thousands of years ago.”
And that is true. But it doesn’t mean we can’t adapt.
That’s it for today. Don’t forget to cue the Sir Charles.
