Alright folks, I’m back after a wonderful vacation in Mexico! And I have a lot of animosity saved up! Somebody’s about to get this work! You ready?! YOU READY?!?! AAAHHHH!!
Cue the Rant
Lol, I’m just kidding. I’m actually kind of relaxed. But with Father’s Day right around the corner, I wanted to rant about a few things as and when it comes to fathers these days.
First of all, Father’s who aren’t in their children’s life at all should be punished to the harshest extent of the law. We all agree on that I’m sure. I mean, its 2013. While I’m sure it’s cases of it going on all the time, I hope that this practice is nearing extinction. If you’re man enough to lie down and make them, you need to be man enough to take care of the consequences.
But even worse than that in my opinion, are the mothers who intentionally try to keep the children away from fathers because the relationship with the dad didn’t work out. Using a child as leverage in any dispute, especially when it comes to the relationship is extremely selfish and just an all around awful thing to do. This only hurts the child especially in the long run. Many people don’t understand the importance of having a father in their or their child’s life. The simple presence of a man can make worlds of a difference. Kids need BOTH parents to have the best chance to succeed and be the best person they can be.
Another thing that grinds my gears is how unequal Mothers Day is to Father’s Day. Mother’s Day is like a national holiday in the United States. Everyone always get their mother’s something and deservedly so. And you know on social media everyone has an awesome tribute to their moms. But when Father’s Day rolls around, you can barely tell what day it is. If the folks on social media aren’t berating their dad their completely ignoring them on fathers day. Now I know this may be because there is a lot more deadbeat dads than there are moms, but I noticed its also a case of folks just playing dad to the left. Your father has just as much to do with you being and turning out the way you are as your mother, whether he was or wasn’t in your life, believe it or not.
I hate to see people take something as powerful and as great as a parents love for granted. I say that because everyone doesn’t have the chance to pick up the phone and call their dads or go spend time with them.
While I was in Mexico, I got the chance to spread my dad’s ashes near the Isla de Mujeres near a statue of Jesus underwater in the Gulf of Mexico. He passed away about a year ago. There isn’t a day that goes by I don’t think of him. And I used to hear that phrase back in the day but it never rang so true with me now. Everything I am and have.. my talent, looks, mannerisms, these rants, my production company.. everything I am and have is because of him.
Dads deserve more than an afterthought. More than a berating on social networks. More than just ‘the big piece of chicken’. They deserve just as much love as moms get. And if he was a deadbeat and never there, you haven’t noticed yet but that’s a blessing too. Everything happens for a reason. So if you’re still able, go call or see your dad. Spend some time, give him a hug and just thank him. Some of us wish we were in your shoes.
That’s it for this week. I’m not gonna cue the Sir Charles this time. Instead say a prayer for your dad or thank God for him.
Oh and rest in peace Dad. I love you and miss you.
