Let me tell ya’ll a little about my hometown. I’m from the capital city of Mississippi and apparently people call us “Jus” (pronouced jooz). Mind you, I didn’t know this was how I’d be known by outsiders until I moved OUT of Jackson. Never had I ever been called a Ju nor did I even know that we had our own little name. Then when I saw the t-shirts and sweatshirts popping up, I had to figure out who was smart enough to capitalize on the growing popularity of the “Jacktown Ju” name.
Brent DeLarge is the 23-year-old mastermind behind the ChuckBarrie The Idol clothing brand and he recently talked with us and shared how he got started in fashion and what projects he has coming up.
JS: So, tell us a little about yourself. Where are you originally from?
BD: I’m 23 years old and I’m a native of New Orleans. I have a strong passion for fashion and I’ve started 5 businesses since I was 17 years old. Ranging from home contracting until my most recent which is a consulting firm for small businesses and non-profits.
JS: What inspired you to create Chuck Barrie clothing?
BD: When I was in about 7th or 8th grade, I started painting on people’s t-shirts and jeans. I painted catchy slogans and cartoon characters and that’s when I knew I wanted to own my own clothing line someday.
JS: How did you come up with the name for your line?
BD: The name “Chuck” was from an alias I used when I didn’t want to tell people my real name in high school. The clothing line mascot is a bear so then came the “Barrie” and lastly I want the brand to be a model for all brands that I can inspire from our concepts and traditions that’s where “the idol” comes in.
JS: Your clothing is a little different from what we’ve seen before, especially coming from Jackson. How do you come up with your designs? Where do you draw inspiration from?
BD: I’ve always had an artistic side and I want every design to tell a story. I get my inspiration from my life’s journey and things that surround current events today.
JS: Your “I Love Jus” shirts were a huge hit! Everyone was rocking one of those shirts! How did those come about?
BD: Before I even started the line I had about 10 designs that I knew would span over the next 2 years, but I knew since I wasn’t from Jackson I had to find a way to connect with the people of Jackson in a positive way. Every city has their own version of the” I Love New York” so I decided to give Jackson their own.
JS: Tell me a little about your collaboration with Clothes Minded Clothing.
BD: I’m pretty good friend with the guys over at Clothes Minded and we have similar foundations when it’s come to our brands. We’ve already done a few events together now we are working on a series of items that touch on current events and even bring back the nostalgia of the childhoods of our generation. People can look forward to us working together for a very long time.
JS: What projects do you have coming up?
BD: Recently I’ve helped launched a wireless headphone brand called “Trilogyz” headphones so be on the look out for those.
JS: Ok, last question… How can people contact you and place orders?
Check me out rocking my “Ain’t No Mountain” crewneck from Chuck Barrie!
