Jasmine Benjamin, a 17-year-old college freshman at Valdosta State University, was found dead around noon on Sunday, November 18 in a study room in her dorm. The Gwinnett, Atlanta native was found unresponsive on a dorm study room couch and had been dead for hours before she was found.
Her parents, James Jackson and Judith Brogan, learned of her death through Facebook – as and when one of Jasmine’s friends made a wall post – before local police could inform them. They say that university officials never notified them of her death.
Initially Jasmine’s parents were told that their daughter died from natural causes, but after results from a preliminary autopsy, they are now being told that her death has been ruled a homicide. Police suspect that her body had been moved.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the FBI are working the case, urging along with her parents that if anyone knows anything about her death to please come forward with information. “Someone knows something,” Jackson told police.
