A new report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that syphilis cases have doubled in the U.S. since 2005, with over 16,000 new infections in 2013. Of those new cases, 91 percent are men.
The report notes that the majority of new cases were among men who have sex with other men and says it is a public health concern:
The increase in syphilis among MSM is a major public health concern, particularly because syphilis and the behaviors associated with acquiring it increase the likelihood of acquiring and transmitting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
