Now that I’m back home and getting to know Jackson all over again, I’m realizing more and more that we have some amazing talent right here in the city. About a week ago I had the opportunity to go to my first Calico Panache concert and it also happened to be a send-off for one of the group’s members. But have no fear, they are not breaking up!
Their name is as unique as what they each bring to the group. “Calico” represents their different styles and personalities and tastes in music while “Panache” represents flair and style. Not only is their music panache, their calico is too! Honestly, these ladies have such magnetic personalities. Not only did I enjoy chatting with them, I had a great time watching them perform. Check out our interview with Jess, OG, Chiquita, CJ and RiRi below for the scoop on what’s next for the all-female band.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: What is each person’s role in the group?
JESS: I basically run the background of Calico Panache…the social networks, whatever promo we’re doing. You know, just reaching out to everybody and letting them know what all we’ve got going on.
OG: I’m the lead singer of Calico Panache.
CJ: I’m the drummer/background singer.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: You sing?! I didn’t know that!
Chiquita: Everybody sings! But I also play the guitar…I’m a background singer and also the motivational speaker (laughing).
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: OK..This is a farewell concert, so who’s moving?
OG: I’m going back home.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: And where is home?
OG: Los Angeles…it’s really hard! I got a job offer and I graduated a year ago and you know, when it comes these days you gotta get it.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: Yes, you do. Now Jess and Chiquita…you all will be moving there as well?
JESS: Yeah, that’s the plan. You know how life is. We’re planning to go out there and just pick up where we left off.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: So Calico Panache is not over?
CALICO PANACHE: OH NOOOO!
OG: We wouldn’t even call it a hiatus because I’m not here.
JESS: We can still technically do music. We can record, send it to her, let her lay her parts, send it right back and we can still keep the music rolling. But as far as us being able to do our shows and stuff like that, we wouldn’t be able to do it until everybody is back.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: How do you all feel about that?
JESS: I mean, it’s cool!
CJ: It’s bittersweet.
JESS: It is bittersweet because we’ve had certain hiatuses since we started. We’ve had months where we haven’t done anything and it’s OK because honestly, we have nothing but time. And that’s just what it is. We’re learning how to be patient.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: What about the support that you all receive? How does that make you feel?
JESS: I KNOW we’re gonna be crying!
OG: The people who are here are the people who have supported us from the beginning. Tougaloo is our family and they’ve been here since the start. I’m overwhelmed. This room is full of love!
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: Do you feel any pressure tonight?
OG: No, not at all. It’s all love.
CHIQUITA: This is our family.
OG: These are the people who I would ask to be here. I mean, it’s perfect.
CJ: Also, it’s original music. When it’s our own music there isn’t any pressure. It’s usually when we’re doing someone else’s music.
JESS: It’s fun to sing songs that people listen to on the radio, but at the same time people don’t realize how tedious it is.
OG: That’s because it’s not you.
JESS: You know what you would be expecting to hear and it’s harder to deliver someone else’s music.
JESSICASIMIEN.COM: So tell me what’s next.
OG: Since I’m going home and we’re gonna be separated for awhile I’m gonna work on a little baby song. I really enjoy songwriting a lot so I’m gonna do something on the side but it’s nothing but Calico Panache. They’re my heart, my best friends, my sisters.
JESS: We’re working on our first EP and it’s gone take time but we have at least three songs done right now.
CJ: We don’t wanna rush it. We want to make sure it has a good quality and performance.
