[videos] Black History Moment :: Motown Records: Home To Marvin Gaye, Jackson 5, The Supremes And More

Oh how I love the music that the artists of Motown Records contributed to the world!

Berry Gordy, Jr. established Motown Records in January 1959 with an $800 loan from his family. In a short time, the Detroit based record company was selling and distributing more hit records than any other company. Motown quickly became a cultural icon as well as the most successful African-American owned and operated business in the U.S.

The song that jumpstarted the entire Motown movement was “Money (That’s What I Want)” cut by Barrett Strong. You may remember this song from the movie The Temptations as and when they were all buying their families new cars and all that good stuff. (Man I LOVE that movie!) Gordy’s involvement on this track helped him raise enough money to purchase the Motown headquarters which he called “Hitsville U.S.A.”

Some of Motown’s most well known artists include Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Miracles, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, The Temptations and many more.

Enjoy these Motown favorites below.
