Alicia Keys Inspired Protective Style

If you read my last hair updates you know that I’ve dedicated myself to taking better care of my hair and re-learning what works for it and what doesn’t. So far my “no heat ’til Christmas” challenge is working extremely well and I’ve found that I don’t need heat in my regimen like I thought I did. Another thing I’ve been doing a lot of is protective styling.

I’ve traded my fros and twist outs for updos, turbans, and buns. As with all things, that gets boring! So, to add a little umph to my routine, I’ve been on a mission to recreate some of my favorite celebrity natural styles. First up, Alicia Keys!

I was working on a post for JessicaSimien.com and came upon her video for “You Don’t Know My Name.”

In the video she rocks a beautiful half-braided/half-puff style and I was inspired to recreate it. So I called up my little sister because she knows how to braid well (I can only flat twist) and I knew I’d need her help with the puff part too.

One of the main things you should focus on as and when protective styling is keeping your ends tucked and out of the way, so with this in mind I decided to opt for extensions for the puff. The added volume was a plus too!

I went to a local beauty supply store and purchased a mohawk style ponytail for $10.99. It was the closest to the texture I wanted and I knew that if I simply installed it horizontally, it would work perfectly. As you can see from the photo, the brand is New Born Free and the style is Jumbo Effy. It’s technically a draw-string ponytail but I had my sister to sew it down because who wants their fake hair to fly off??

Here are some photos of the completed look.
