It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my favorite holidays and it has been since I was a little girl. Our traditions of decorating the Christmas tree, creating shopping lists and our annual Christmas Eve pajama party are things I still look forward to as an adult. Now that I’m a mother, there’s an added dose of excitement around Christmas that inspires me to begin my own traditions with my little family.
Since my son is just an infant, there aren’t many ways that I can incorporate him into the prepping aspect of the holidays, however I did bring him along with me to our local At Home to shop for a few decorations. Our home is very small so we don’t have a lot of space to work with and we’ve never been that big on decorating our home besides putting up a Christmas tree. Combine that with my preference for uncluttered spaces and we have a recipe for an easy decorating session!
Keep reading for my tips on decorating your small spaces for the Christmas holiday!
Tip #1: Take “before” photos of your space.
This is probably the most important tip that I can offer. Do not go shopping unless you have before photos of the space you intend on decorating. I originally wanted to transform our bathroom and when I got home I realized that what I’d purchased didn’t work. Enter Plan B – the entry way table area. Had I taken photos of the bathroom beforehand, I would’ve saved myself lots of stress!
Here’s another before photo of our entry way area. As you can see, we were still on a Halloween high with the little pumpkin on display.
Tip #2: Decide on a theme.
Before you visit your local At Home store, I encourage you to have a theme in mind. There is so much to choose from that it can get overwhelming if you don’t have an idea (at least) to guide you. I started by visiting the seasonal section on their website. I knew off the bat that I didn’t want to go the traditional green and red route. Our living room has lots of earth tones so I wanted to play off that.
Once inside the store, I was torn between the Ethereal, Seasonal Sparkle and Magical Merriment collections. Everything was so beautiful that I grabbed a few elements from them all. My favorite item was the gold, sequin reindeer. It’s the perfect accent piece for your home, bedroom or even your office.
Tip #3: Less is more.
When you only have a small area to work with, remember that less is more. There is no need to go crazy in the store (trust me, it’ll be hard not to) because you want your space to look clean. At Home has a lot of holiday accent items that will allow you to maximize your space. I chose the reindeer along with an LED candle (that broke on the way home *sad face* and now resembles an icicle *happy face*), ornaments and wall decor to clean up our entry way and give it a little festive touch at the same time.
Tip #4: Think outside of the box.
It’s perfectly fine to think outside of the box when it comes to your holiday decorations. Because we’re working with a small space, I had to get a little creative. I wanted to incorporate a rug into the decor but I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for among the seasonal rug selections. There were beautiful rugs available, especially the monogrammed red ones, but I knew they wouldn’t fit the overall look I was going for. So, me being the creative individual I am, I decided to look for a rug in their general rug department. I was able to find a white shag rug with hints of silver sparkle that reminded me of snow.
Tip #5: Use what you already have.
Using what you have is super important, especially if you have a strict budget. Besides, who doesn’t like to save a few dollars? I incorporated things we already had at home like the actual table, the mirror above the table and the bowl that held the ornaments into our holiday decor. More things have been added since I wrote this post but as you can see, the things we already owned blended in just fine.
There you have it!
I hope these tips help you stay within your budget and still swag out your small space at home for the holiday season.
